Match report 2
Match versus Colliton
Tuesday 31 July 07
Champions!!
A wonderfully hot sunny
evening was a rare sight as Charlton Down and Colliton played their
rescheduled match at the beautifully set CDCC ground. With no doubts of
it raining, snowing or flooding, Charlton Down emerged from the changing
room looking to seal their tenth straight win that would see them clinch
the Dorchester Evening League Division 3 title.
Colliton won the toss
and duly elected to bat first. Coates-Dale was of course promoted to
open the bowling, it has to be said this decision was based purely on
merit and nothing to do with Fagence & Mitchell not being there from the
start!! (put this way as his mum & dad read the report!!). It was alas,
and not for the first time that Mark Homewood collected the first couple
of wickets with his accurate left arm boomerang bowling. He finished up
with three wickets taking him to 20 wickets for the second league season
in a row. With both opening bowlers restricting Colliton to a meagre 26
runs from the first 12 overs it was left to Chris Towndrow and the now
present James Mitchell to wrap things up taking the last 6 wickets for a
paltry 7 runs, Colliton being dismissed for 34 on the last ball of their
allotted 18 overs, their top scorer only managing 6 runs.
With such a low score to
chase the captain made the decision that there would be at least one
century in the match, opening the batting with the youthful and
effervescent talents of Andy Smith & Mike Lingham (a combined age of
over 100!!). To cut what would be a long story (if Lingham talked you
through it) short; they got the runs in a little over 4 overs. If
remembered correctly I think there is something about Lingham hitting a
6 to seal victory and the title in his score of 27, but let’s not go
there!!
A soaked but exuberant
captain said after the match that he would like to extend his gratitude
to all club members and players for their continuing support over the
winter summer. With 2 games left CDCC will be looking to go the season
undefeated when they play Frampton and BAE. The captain has said he will
pick two different teams in an effort to get more players involved as
the league title is now secure. With such an in-depth and talented squad
to choose from you can be rest assured Charlton Down will be playing to
win whilst continuing their excellent format of having fun.
