THURSDAY MAY 3RD
LEAGUE VERSUS
WINIFRED
So to our first league
game of the season on a glorious spring evening. Our ground was
resplendent, bathed in sunshine, with an outfield that resembled the
Moon!
Charlton Down won the
toss and decided to bat. The pitch, bowlers and moon surface proved to
be very slow, but an opening stand of 54 between Andy Smith (18) and
Andy Cossens (42) got us off to a good start. Another useful partnership
between Mark Homewood (17) and Chris Coates- Dale (19) raised our total
to 111 for 5 off our allotted 18 overs.
In reply, Winfrith
attempted to attack from the start, but tidy spells from Rich Fagence
(3-25) and Mark Homewood (1-29) meant that the run rate was always
rising. Good fielding and further tight bowling from Zarak Afzaal
resulted in Winfrith finishing their overs some 21 runs short of the
required total.
A good start to the
season for Charlton Down. We have a friendly next Thursday at home to
Dorset CC and one on Sunday May 13 against Hospital Services, again at
home. So all the support will be appreciated. Our next competitive match
is on Thursday May 17 when we are at Plush in the Cup, and the next
league game is home to Colliton on Thursday May 24th.
