CDDC versus Portland RT 2nds

Sunday 13 July 2008

Butterworth decimates islanders bowling to set a club record

After a cancelled match the previous week and a bad performance against Broadstone, Charlton Down were keen to get back to winning ways. Sid lost the toss and were promptly put into bat.

For the first time this season the opening pair stayed the same as the previous game, with Bradshaw and Gollidge taking to the middle. The pair made 32 before Bradshaw (4) fell. Will Lowther on his first game of the season joined Ben at the crease briefly until Gollidge (26) holed out to deep mid wicket.

Enter JB, keen to banish memories of his 3 scored last time he faced the Portland attack was looking in good touch. Lowther (10) was done by a good inswinger and the score was 52-3. Sid, still looking for his first double figure score at home, and JB put on 46 when Sid fell for 13(at least it was over 10). JB was looking set at 32 for a big innings and when Phil Holcroft made his first league trip to the crease the runs really started to flow.

JB reached his 50 and then Phil hit a big 6 nearly over the lower road. This stung JB into more action as he started bludgeoning the ball to all parts. Cars, clubhouse were hit and also a few passers by were in danger. JB’s first 50 came up in 51 balls, his 100 only took another 22 balls to reach. A fantastic partnership of 116 came to an end when Holcroft fell for a classy 28 .

Rickard looked to give JB the strike and in an attempt to stem the flow of runs, Portland brought back their opening bowler. First 4 balls went for 4,4,6and 6.As the innings came to close and out of breath Jon remained unbeaten on 138 and Rickard on 9. The home side had demoralised Portland by finishing on 262 for 5.

A fantastic tea and CD took to the field. Homewood and Pretty (8-0-16) led from the front with some accurate bowling although it seemed that the visitors had no intention of chasing the total with their run rate never really going over 3. After the drinks break Rickard (8-2-14) and Wormgoor(7-0-16) took over bowling duties with Rickard finally making a breakthrough in the 16th over, Bradshaw taking a good catch. Rickard also cleaned up one of the Red Triangle big hitters with great use of his off breaking slower ball. Another drinks break another change in the bowling and Towndrow and Holcroft(3-0-12) tried to make a difference. Towndrow with a great spell took the dogged opener, who had scored just 27 in 31 overs with solid but defensive play, with his 2nd ball. Towndrow struck again in his 3rd, 4th and 6th overs. A great return to form for Towndrow with final figures of 8-4-32. Homewood came back on eventually picking up a wicket (9-1-35) and Butterworth(2-1-10)completed  a great all round game with a very rare stumping thanks to some good glove work from Bradshaw.

At stumps Portland Red Triangle 2nds ended up on 152-8 meaning a 19 point victory for the home side. Some inventive field placing, good fielding and superb line and length bowling still not managing to dismiss the away side who were defending from the off. Well done to Will Lowther for a juggled but eventually well held catch in the deep and the whole team for a excellent all round performance.

Huge congratulations go to JB in smashing (with those big 6's) the club record in style
