Charlton Down Choke: The 6th game of the season and Charlton Down are finally toppled.

Charlton Down versus Broadstone 2nds Sunday 29th June 2008

Broadstone 2nds are the visitors and have turned up with ten players. At the start of the match CD also are down to ten with the very late arrival of Coates-Snail from oxford via Taunton.

The game started badly when Sid lost the toss and it all went downhill from there. A text message from Coates Dale said, “Should be there by 3” and with a man down the home side were fortunately put into bat. Gollidge and Bradshaw made a slow but steady start making it to 34 before Gollidge (14) fell.

Then the wickets started to tumble.

  • Bradshaw (11)
  • Homewood (7)
  • Silk (5)
  • Lingham (0)
  • Sid (7)

The score now at  50 –6 .

With the time at about 2.50 and a Snail nowhere in sight  it was up to Joy and Wormgoor to hold on. They put on a good 20 before Joy fell for his high score (9). 3.10 and still no Snail. Just as Afzal headed to the middle CCD pulls up and rushes into the dressing room for a very quick change. It needed to be quick as Afzal returned not having scored to the pavilion. (Warning 2 more ducks from Zarak and we get to shave his head).

With the score at 70 -8 Coates Dale joined Rudo at the crease and the pair slowly inched there way towards the 1st batting point at 90. They passed this making it to 93 before Rudo (6), having seen off the quicker bowlers with some excellent grit and defensive play, slashed a shot straight to mid wicket as soon as the spinner came on.

Adcock (1 n/o) joined Snail in the middle and they added another 14 before CCD , who was farming the strike well eventually perished (33) .

A poor total but a defendable one with some of this years bowling performances.

Well played to Rudo who faced 31 balls allowing CCD to inch the score up. It just goes to show if you just stay at the crease some runs will come.

Tea done (thanks to Pauline) and CD took the field and despite an early breakthrough for Homewood (1-33) the Home attack didn’t seem to get any luck. Afzal  (0-27) in particular beat the bat on countless occasions with some great bowling but with no success. Silk (0-29), Coates Dale (0-10) and Wormgoor (0.3 – 2) toiled away but the visiting team moved serenely towards the total achieving this for the loss of just 1 wicket.

Charlton Down lost obtaining just 1 point. Other results mean that we remain in 2nd place in the league and there is still all to play for.

Philosophically Sid summed it up “It was just one of those days”.

Lets put this behind us and hope for a better result this weekend on our trip to top of the league Puddletown.
