Charlton Down versus Puddletown reserves

Thursday 21 May 09

A week’s break for summer (rain), and so to the start of the home campaign. Warmth at last; the Herrison Oval bedappled in late spring sunshine, the smell of freshly cut grass, hot dogs, and 22 kit bags pervading the somnolent air.

CDCC were inserted and the old opening pair of Skip and Smithy re-established their partnership. It wasn’t long, however, that disaster struck; Skip wrongly taking off for a single. Smithy declines to move, and stoically stands his ground, like a stoic person who stands his ground. 10-1. In strides Ed with his new weapon, and he and the aforementioned Smithy start to climb into the Puddletown bowling.

With 70 rattled up after 7 overs, Ed decides not to use his eyes (more later) and is bowled; Smithy follows soon after, but his contribution was Trescothickesque to say the least. Doyley the bin man and JB then carry on the slapping and tickling; JB not timing the six into the car park, and Doyley nurdling a quick 24. With a few smotes from Zim Jones and the Handyman, CDCC close their innings on 149 in 18 overs.

Puddletown make a brave effort in chasing this not too inconsiderable score, but steady blowing from Rich, Mark, Jesus and Zim make their task too much to overcome. 3 run outs not helping their cause. CDCC did however try to assist with a few drops, notably Ed who, no matter what excuse he could muster (fly got in his eye, thoughts of sleepless nights, the fear of dropping a dolly), floors one that even Colette would have caught…….(well subject to any impingement).

Puddletown’s innings closes at 94, so another win to CDCC.
