Charlton Down versus Lychett Matravers

Sunday 14 June 09

CD Bowlers blitz Lychett Matravers

With Charlton Down having lost by 1 wicket last week Skip felt a need for the team to bounce back. After finding the ground and with the sun in the sky Sid won the toss and chose to bat.  He then took the unusual decision to decide the batting order on name only. All those called Chris were to be in the top 3. With Snail running a few minutes late (as usual) it was up to Jesus and Rickard to take the honours. With  instructions to both of them to stay out there for at least the 1st 10 overs alas within 11 balls both were safely tucked up back in the pavilion. Snail and Sid took over both dug in before Sid swiped poorly and was LBW for 6. Mark Fenwick came in at 5 with the score on 25-3. The 2 batters played an excellent game solidifying the score, Snail moved safely past his 4th 50 of the season and the partnership was worth 87 before Mark fell for 26. As Doylie entered CCD soon went in the other direction for a superb 79 giving CD a real shot in the arm.  Once again orders were issued to stay out there with Doylie, the next 5 bats spectacularly ignored these instructions, some went down to good deliveries some to bad shots but John Moise(6) JP and Will Silk (both 0)  Matt Lowther (2) and Zarak(8) left Ian stranded on 32 n/o and the score on 178. So as we have seen in previous weeks too many CD batsman gave their wicket away resulting in a low but defendable total.

With a lowish total the CD bowlers needed to turn up and bowl well from the off. Zarak, back after 4 weeks off taking exams, and JP did just that. Right from the word go the pressure was put on with both bowlers swinging the ball. Z struck with wickets in his 2nd,5th and 7th overs(8-0-22-3) . At the other end JP kept things very tight as usual picked up figures of 9-2-18-2. With such a good bowling base and the fielding energy way up on the previous week, skip brought Matt Lowther and Will Silk into the attack. Both starting their first game of the season they didn’t take long to wrap the innings up Lowther(3-0-17-3) and Silk(1.5-0-9-2) effortlessly took over from where Z and JP left off. All 4 bowlers swung the ball, hit good lengths and areas and didn’t give any of the opposition batsman any chance to chase the run total.

Another noteable improvement was in the field. 5 catches , no drops and good effort all the way through.

The excellent win pots us another 20 points and demonstrates plenty of improvement all round the park. It was a great effort from all in the field but we now need to focus on producing depth in the batting.

Bournemouth 2nd up next who have 5 wins from 5 so far so a tough one. Bring it on I say.
