4th Division Match: Charlton Down Sunday 1st Team v Winton (from somewhere near Bournemouth)

With rain in the air and a strong 4th placed Winton side raring to go at the Herrison Oval there were challenges aplenty for CD’s finest. A decent side had been assembled and the battle was set fair. The skipper made his most telling contribution by wining the toss, when you have around 7 bowlers in the team the new ball can be very useful, but when you have an on-song, full bore Kim (Jung) Park with the wind behind him, and a new ball, the game takes on a different dimension.

For some reason the CD team seemed to have 12 players on the pitch, quite some achievement when we only had 9 on the pitch at the start of play. There was an intensity, unusual on a Sunday and I had the feeling this was a bowling side I wouldn’t like to face batting wise, too many ugly faces.

The direction of the game was set early doors when the Parkster stuck one round the batsmen’s ear ’ole, then forced him to jam down on a Yorker before bowling him with a pretty fast length ball. None of the batsmen really fancied getting in line much after that but with an angry snarling fast bowler shaking his fist inches from your face it is not surprising, things calmed down once the skipper had a word with JP.

With JP pinning the batsmen to their crease with no room for manoeuvre and the roaring sputnik at the other end, together with excellent fielding and decent catching, CD’s exuberant ensemble quickly took to the front foot and wickets tumbled, at 46-6 the temptation may have been for the captain to change the bowling, but then he would have risked serious violence from team mates after the Symene show earlier in the season. By the time the dynamic duo had finished their 12 over’s each the score was 60-9 and the JP had finished with 3-28, with Kim, after a superb haul of hostile fast bowling, taking 5-36. Two catches for the ginger one and an excellent run out were quickly finished off as Fagenti took the last wicket and a fine job was completed as Winton were 69 all out, still wondering quite what had hit them.

Now Winton were a little riled with the aggressive fast bowling and feisty approach (not sledging, just a bit exuberant) taken by the home team, especially when a bouncer was mistakenly bowled at the young number 11, and resolved to make sure the opener’s knew about their bowling attack too. It was at this point the skipper realised two things, firstly Winton’s bowling attack contained 3 decent fast bowlers, so winning the toss had been useful, secondly opening the batting is often not a pleasurable experience, this being a case in point.

The opening duo of Zim and Doylie endured a fair barrage of fast short pitched bowling, bruises and comments, without audible reply and slowly fought their way through over by over, determined not to surrender a point. Zim’s excellent form and phlegmatic approach to the game served him well again, and the skipper dug a hole and stayed in it. By the time the comments in the field had died down and the bowlers changed for the last few ending over’s the opener’s had fought their way through to 70 for 0 from 20 testing over’s and trooped gratefully off to find the frozen peas and shake their team mates hands for a well earned win and best performance of the season. Zim 40 not out, Doylie 18 not out.

Later in the Blue Raddle the evening ended as only a Charlton Down evening can when Chas admitted to having recently bought an accordion from e-bay. Chas admitted he neither could nor wanted to ever play the accordion. When asked why he had bought it, he confessed he put in an early bid as most bids are superseded late in the process, mostly he wanted to know how much someone might pay for an accordion. Well no-one did outbid Chas and he is now the proud owner of an accordion he will never be able to play, but crucially does know the answer to the question: Chas the answer is £80!! That’s how much someone might pay, so your curiosity has been satisfied.
